Upper School Program

Program Overview

As children transition into their teens and look towards college preparation, homeschooling can once again take on the foreboding, unknown haziness that may have surrounded the initial decision to home school. Many kids transition to local high schools just due to the uncertainty. The stakes seem higher – how can we as parents ensure that our children have the qualifications to satisfy all the requirements to graduate from high school, much less be admitted into college?

At this stage, ODE seeks to provide more than just enrichment classes. Our desire is to walk alongside you, provide encouragement and comradery – in addition to practical and logistical support. Homeschooling through high school is a very effective, viable educational option. Discouragement and fear can be the biggest hindrance. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” said President Roosevelt before he rolled up his sleeves and helped lift the country out of the worst depression in its history. Together we will lay fear and uncertainty aside and do what it takes to launch capable and wise children, qualified to take on college or whatever may be in their path.

We encourage students to carefully consider the class offerings and make a serious commitment to their selections. We believe that each and every student can succeed and fulfill all the requirements laid out. To that end, we will require a signed contract from each student, agreeing to make every effort to meet the requirements. Beginning in the 2017-2018 year, ODE will record student progress and issue grades twice throughout the year. Our school year has been lengthened to 32 weeks in order to complete a full course that a parent can feel confident putting on a transcript. We believe this commitment to a class will prepare our students well for life beyond their home school experience.

Expectations

Every class offered at ODE is a high-quality, carefully planned class. The instructor is knowledgeable in the subject matter, and highly qualified to instruct the students. Classes are lively and engaging, sometimes rip-roaring discussions erupt as students wrestle with difficult issues. Other classes involve labs, art, singing – learning is multi-faceted and active. Learning is not always quiet nor somber!

Commitment

Beginning in the school year 2017-2018 we will no longer be encouraging or allowing audits. Every student needs to carefully consider the requirements of the class and determine whether they have the time and interest in taking the class. Once a student is enrolled, they will be asked to sign a contract with the commitment spelled out.

Grades

Also beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, students work and progress will be recorded and grades will be issued. Our upper school teachers believe that this will benefit the students by requiring a standard which they must meet

Attendance

Tardiness

Students must be in class and seated on time for each class. If this is impossible for whatever reason, the student must communicate with the teacher or director as appropriate. When class begins, the door to the classroom will be closed. Any tardy individual will have to be accompanied by an adult staff person to enter the classroom – quietly and without disturbing the flow of the class. This will be enforced.

Absentees

If sickness or another conflict arises, please let the director know by email or phone prior to the start of the first class.
