Hello Dolphin Swimmers!
This week’s book is If I Built a House, written and illustrated by Chris Van Dusen.
You can watch the book here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyPnrkiiDOI
You will be able to see the words in the video – try to follow along with the reader.
If YOU Built a House – Jack imagined a house that would have everything he needed. We are all spending a lot more time in our houses these days. If you were to design a house, what special features would you add to make staying at home more fun? Draw a picture or some blue-prints! Tell your family about your dream house.
Build a model – On the last page of the story, we see Jack sitting at the picnic table with a model of his dream house built out of Lego, cardboard, and Tinker Toys. Use materials around your house to build a room in your dream home.
Jack said the house they live in now is “bland” – what does bland mean?
The rooms in Jack’s dream house are “unique” – what does unique mean?
As a child, Chris Van Dusen enjoyed reading books by Dr. Seuss.
The author wrote this story in rhyme. Listen again and make a list of words that rhyme.
Author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen has written two other books about Jack – If I Built a Car, & If I Built a School.
He also wrote a series of books about a character named Mr. Magee and his dog Dee (Did you notice the reader zoom in on a man and a dog in a yellow car while she was reading the story? That’s Mr. Magee!).
You can check out the author’s website for more information about him and his books. Here’s a link: http://www.chrisvandusen.com/
