Course Materials: Fuzzy Mud, Louis Sachar. Island of the Blue Dolphins, Scott O’Dell. OPTIONAL Advanced students may read The Wanderer by Sharon Creech and complete an assignment comparing it to Island of the Blue Dolphins (request assignment format)

Week 1 NO READING. Fuzzy Mud will be introduced in class. Homework: read Fuzzy Mud chapters 1-17.

Week 2 Discuss chapters 1-17. Homework: read chapters 18-Epilogue.

Week 3 Discuss chapters 18-Epilogue.  Homework: complete assignment for Fuzzy Mud

Week 4 Last chance to hand in Fuzzy Mud assignment. Island of the Blue Dolphins introduced in class. Homework: read Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 1-9

Week 5 Discuss Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 1-9. Homework: read Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 10-19.

Week 6 Discuss Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 10-19. Homework: read Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 20-29. Complete assignment.

Week 7 Discuss Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 20-29. Last chance to hand in Island of the Blue Dolphins assignment. Homework: none

Week 8 Game day

Course Materials:

A Night Divided, Jennifer A. Nielsen. Deals with the division between east and west Germany by the Berlin Wall.

Week 1:

NO READING. Book will be introduced in class. Homework: read chapters 1-8.

Week 2:

Discuss chapters 1-8. Homework: read chapters 9-16.

Week 3:

Discuss chapters 9-16. Homework: read chapters 17-24.

NO CLASS November 24 Thanksgiving break

Week 4:

Discuss chapters 17-24. Homework: read chapters 25-32.

Week 5:

Discuss chapters 25-32. Homework: read chapters 33-40.

Week 6:

Discuss chapters 33-40. Homework: read chapters 41-47

NO CLASS Dec. 22&29 Holiday Break

Week 7:

Last day to hand in optional assignment.

Week One:

Tuck Everlasting introduced in class. No reading due.
Homework: Read Prologue through chapter 13 and Look for at least 3 unfamiliar words from each chapter and examples of personification, discussed in class.

Week Two:

Discuss Prologue through chapter 13
Homework: Read chapter 14-Epilogue (after chapter 25)

Week Three:

Discuss chapters 14-Epilogue
Homework: Optional assignment Tuck Everlasting.

Week Four:

Communication activity. Introduce The Wishing Spell.
Homework: Read Prologue-chapter 7

Week Five:

Discuss The Wishing Spell, Prologue-chapter 7
Homework: Read chapters 8-15

Week Six:

Discuss The Wishing Spell chapters 8-15
Homework: Read chapters 16-24

Week Seven:

Discuss The Wishing Spell chapters 16-24
Homework: finish optional homework

Week Eight:

Wrap-up session. Play games.

Additional Resources:

  1. If students are unable to keep up with the reading pace, they are
    welcome to listen to audio books, although I would recommend you have them narrate what they heard to you periodically to increase retention.
