Course Materials: Fuzzy Mud, Louis Sachar. Island of the Blue Dolphins, Scott O’Dell. OPTIONAL Advanced students may read The Wanderer by Sharon Creech and complete an assignment comparing it to Island of the Blue Dolphins (request assignment format)

Week 1 NO READING. Fuzzy Mud will be introduced in class. Homework: read Fuzzy Mud chapters 1-17.

Week 2 Discuss chapters 1-17. Homework: read chapters 18-Epilogue.

Week 3 Discuss chapters 18-Epilogue.  Homework: complete assignment for Fuzzy Mud

Week 4 Last chance to hand in Fuzzy Mud assignment. Island of the Blue Dolphins introduced in class. Homework: read Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 1-9

Week 5 Discuss Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 1-9. Homework: read Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 10-19.

Week 6 Discuss Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 10-19. Homework: read Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 20-29. Complete assignment.

Week 7 Discuss Island of the Blue Dolphins chapters 20-29. Last chance to hand in Island of the Blue Dolphins assignment. Homework: none

Discuss chapters 14-26. Homework: none

NO CLASS November 24 Thanksgiving break

Week 4:

NO READING. Book introduced in class. Homework: read chapters 1-5

Week 5:

Discuss chapters 1-5. Homework: read chapters 6-11.

Week 6:

Discuss chapters 6-11. Homework: read chapters 11-17. Finish optional assignment.

NO CLASS Dec. 22&29 Holiday Break

Week 7:

Discuss chapters 11-17. Last chance to hand in optional assignments. Homework: none.

Course Materials:

The Wishing Spell, The Land of Stories, Chris Colfer

Student work and behavior will be tracked using an App called
ClassDojo. Parents who wish to view this activity from home, please
let me know and you will receive an invitation.

 

Week One:

Land of Stories introduced in class. No reading due.
Homework: Read Prologue-chapters 3 The Wishing Spell. Look for 3 unfamiliar words.
Review assignment options to be completed by week 7.

Week Two:

Discuss Prologue through chapter 3
Homework: Read chapters 4-7. Consider optional assignment choices.

Week Three:

Discuss chapters 4-7
Homework: Read chapters 8-11. Decide on optional assignment due week 7.

Week Four:

Discuss chapters 8-11
Homework: Read chapters 12-15. Work on assignment due week 7.

Week Five:

Discuss chapters 12-15
Homework: Read chapters 16-19. Work on assignment due week 7.

Week Six:

Discuss chapters 16-19
Homework: Read chapters 20-24. Complete Optional assignment

Week Seven:

Discuss chapters 16-24. Volunteer assignment presentations.
Homework: none

Week Eight:

Wrap-up session. Play games.

 

Additional Resources:

  1. If students are unable to keep up with the reading pace, they are
    welcome to listen to audio books, although I would recommend you have them narrate what they heard to you periodically to increase retention.
  2. For faster readers, please follow the schedule and do other activities mentioned next.
  3. For each book there will be a vocabulary list on vocabulary.com for your student to practice.
