Session 1 ~ Syllabus
Prentice Hall: Biology (Copyright: 2006 — ISBN 0-13-166255-4)
I have chosen to use an older edition of this textbook for two reasons: first, this edition and the most recent edition are largely the same (with most of the content we are going to cover in class honestly being word-for-word the same.) Second, because the editions are so similar, utilizing the older edition will be able to save you a significant amount. Buying a used copy of this edition should cost you approximately ten dollars, which is a fraction of the cost of a used copy of the most recent edition (which is about eighty dollars or more.) Within reason, try to purchase this printing of the edition (you can search for this printing with the above ISBN) so that page numbers will be the same for all students and any review questions would be the same.
Note: In our Biology textbook, evolution is taught fairly extensively–both in its own section as well as periodically throughout the textbook. In class, we will not cover chapters 15 through 18 on evolution; rather, I encourage each family to read and discuss these chapters independently. As for when evolution is brought up periodically throughout the rest of the textbook, we will ignore such discussion points, any major section will likely not be assigned during the weekly readings, and nothing concerning evolutionary processes will be in any review question or on any test. As such, the topic of evolution will be a topic reserved for each family independently and will not be discussed in class.
Tentative Class Schedule: An updated version of the schedule will be given out whenever a change is made. Closer to the start of ODE, additional information will be added to the syllabus–such as page numbers for the weekly reading, questions for the weekly assignments, and other additional information.
