Description
ASL 101 is a class that will introduce students to the basics of the language and the culture of American Sign Language. The course will help the student develop the skills and knowledge to be able to communicate in American Sign Language. The focus of this course will be on everyday life experiences and use of the language. We will have opportunities to learn more about the deaf community by attending different events to better understand and learn from them. This course is designed for students with no or minimal sign language skills.

Course Requirements
- Attendance: This is a “hands -on” class and attendance is crucial for effective learning.
- Course reading and participation: Sign language is a living language and is best learned through participation, both expressive and receptive. Your grade will be calculated on whether you read your assignments on time, the level of your participation in class, and practice time outside of class.
- In-Class Demonstrations: Students will be assigned to demonstrate (both individually and within teams) acquired vocabulary on a regular basis.
- Weekly Quizzes: Each week students will be evaluated on receptive skills.
- Chapter Vocabulary Phrases: Each week, students will be required to submit five sentences ready for signing in class. Phrase are to be written in both English and ASL format.
- Paragraphs and Songs: Students will be preparing paragraphs to sign and learning to change songs into ASL.
- Tests: You will have 4 tests. Each test will be after 4 chapters worth of content.
- Final Exam: A cumulative exam will be given in expressive, receptive, and written forms. Any concepts or vocabulary discussed in class or covered in assignments may be on the exam.
There will be extra credit opportunities. Late work is not accepted, except in case of emergency or prior arrangement with teacher.

Due each week:
Practice Sign Vocabulary: Practice 20 minutes 5 x per week = 100 minutes and 30 minutes with someone else who signs.
Practice Fingerspelling: http://asl.ms/ Get a score of 15, any speed or # letters
Phrases: Write 5 sentences to demonstrate next week that include vocab from new chapter.
