Program Description

What is ODE and who is it for?
O.D.E. is a one day a week educational program designed for homeschooled children. O.D.E. offers enrichment-type classes to augment the education of your child, classes that can be more effectively taught in a group. Each class upholds a high standard of excellence, and a syllabus is available at the beginning of every session for the parent to know exactly what their child will be learning and doing.

Are classes organized by grades?
Elementary-age children are divided in the following groups: 1st and 2nd grade, 3rd and 4th grade, and 5th and 6th grade, and junior high and high school. As a homeschooling parent, no one knows your child better than you. The age/grade guidelines are general, and you should place your child in the class you think is most appropriate. Adjustments can be made as classes get underway, also with the input of the teacher.

We are pleased to offer preschool for children aged 3-5. There are two preschool classes - a junior preschool for the 3 year olds, and a preschool for 4 and 5 year olds. Our preschool is not limited to homeschool families.

What classes do you offer?
ODE offers a class in the following areas each session: P.E., Fine Arts, Science, a Unit Study, and Boys' and Girls' club with life skills. Click here to view the scope and sequence for our first 6 completed years of ODE.

What should students bring?
Students are expected to have a 3-ring binder with dividers to bring each week, along with paper and pencils.

What about homework?
Homework will be made available to further enhance the classes. However, the O.D.E. staff wishes to play a supportive role to homeschooling parents rather than create additional pressure. The older children, who can do work independently, will be asked to do assignments as the teacher deems appropriate. We believe this responsibility is one our children will benefit from having, but grades will not be given, nor will there be negative consequences. However, our Jr. High and up classes will have a substantial workload at home in order to qualify as "transcriptable" classes.

Jr. High and Highschool Fine Arts with Mrs. Karina Jacks.

Sculpture

For the past three sessions we have built up knowledge of how to see and accurately represent an object. First we began with pencil and pen, then we moved on to paint and a variety of other drawing materials. This session we will make the jump to three dimensional work. Sculpture demands a whole new way of thinking, but begins with the basic skills we learned in our previous lessons. Together we will explore paper mache, found objects, transforming line into sculpture, and soap carving. Come prepared for hands on activity!

Jr. High and Highschool PE with Mr. Malcolm Burges.

Unit with Mr. Matt Kudo

Ten-hut!! The first battles of the American Revolution were fought by Minutemen; grab your musket, bullets, and powder, and you’re ready to go on a minute’s notice. Today, the American military is much more complex – and confusing! Why does the Army have pilots? How come the Marines are part of the Navy? What are all those acronyms – CVN, DDG, SSBN, WMD, and countless others? What are the SEALs, Green Berets, or Rangers? And just what is the difference between a soldier and a Marine anyway? In this unit, students will learn about the history and organization of the three branches of the American military. We will also learn about some of the equipment and hardware the military has developed in the past and present, as well as its effect on civilian technology. Come learn about the United States military today!

Art with Mrs. Karina Jacks

We've had a great year of art making! Our first session began with studying artists that are alive today, then we moved on to paper crafts around the world, and last session we examined the elements of design. In our final session we will be discovering Outsider Art. Outsider Art is work that becomes famous even though the artist has not received formal training. These artists create without restrictions and rules. They break the confines of the art world and challenge our idea for what is needed to become a great artist. As we learn about

P.E. with Mr. Malcolm Burges

Physical education at O.D.E. teaches more than just physical fitness.  Through fun and exciting games and activities, students learn important life skills such as cooperation, strategy, cool-headedness, group decision-making, and personal perseverance.

Math/Geography with Ms. Sarah Wagner

During this session, we will be devoting every other week to either math or geography, alternately. In the geography portion of this session, we will ‘travel’ to Asia as we delve into the wonders of culture and cartography in this exciting region of the world. Math classes will consist of exciting math games, intended to stimulate students’ minds and encourage them that math can indeed be fun!!
